Railway wooden sleepers – parameters
The tie task is to take over the wheels pressure on the rails and move it to the priming surface. Furthermore, it keeps proper width of the rail.
Tie is based on priming layer. Under pressure of vehicle’s wheels, priming is working on bending and in places of sleepers – on compression. The biggest bending points exist are under the rail in the sectional view; therefore, the most powerful priming protection should occur under the rails and on the both sides with the exception of central part of the priming (50 cm) which remains unprotected.
Distance between the tie’s axes in railway track depends on axis pressure, rail’s type and its length, sort of ties as well as track’s significance. This distance oscillates between 655 – 578 mm.
Wooden ties are made of soft wood (pine) or hard wood (beech and oak). To extend ties’ ability to work, they are saturated with agents against rotting. The most significant impregnating agent is creosote’s oil. Before saturating you should drill a hole for screws in the ties.
In the cross-section, ties have oval or cuboid’s shape. Each of the sorts is divided into types. In PKP (Polish National Railway) wooden, steel or concrete ties are used.
